Summary:
#1. Just stick with cardio: Cardio is a great form of exercise that helps your heart and health in general. According to research, cardio doesn’t work the same way with everyone. Studies reveal that some individuals lose weight with cardio while others maintain their weight or even gain some weight with cardio. Research suggests that the best way to lose weight and maintain muscle mass is to combine cardio with some strength training. #2. Weight loss is about calories in and calories out: This is not necessarily true because not all calories are the same. The types of food you consume significantly affect your hormones, hunger, and appetite and all these have an effect on your weight. For example, eating a small 250-calorie muffin is not the same as eating a 250-calorie bowl of legumes. This is because muffins contain refined carbs which have been shown to spike your blood sugar, increase your hunger levels shortly after eating, and thus lead to overeating. #3. Reduce your intake of natural fats: Fats generally have more calories than proteins and carbs, however not all fats are unhealthy, they take a while to digest and can be very filling. Research shows that low fat diets have not performed greatly in terms of weight loss results. According to several studies foods high in natural fat such as coconuts, nuts, and avocados have been shown to help with weight loss. #4. Never skip breakfast: Did you know that studies reveal that whether you eat or skip breakfast it does not affect your weight. As a matter of fact, it has been found that skipping breakfast may be slightly helpful in losing weight. That said, everyone is different and while some people can skip breakfast, others wake up in the morning feeling very hungry and needing breakfast. #5. Don’t try to lose weight quickly: I’m pretty sure you’ve heard that if you lose weight too quickly, you might gain it all back if not more. Now studies have found that the speed of your weight loss does not increase your chances of gaining the weight back. In fact, these studies reveal that losing weight quickly can benefit your weight loss in the long term. #6. Do juice cleanses: Even though some people claim to get fast results from juice cleanses, it may not be a healthy way to lose weight as it is very unsustainable and can’t be done over the long term. Also, research suggests that these juices tend to contain little protein and high amounts of sugar which is not great for your appetite and health. #7. Eat several small meals throughout the day: While this kind of eating strategy may work for some people, that is if you can actually keep your calorie consumption down, it may mark the beginning of overeating for others and thus lead to weight gain.
#8. Don’t use the scale everyday: Research suggests that weighing yourself frequently can provide some form of accountability to ensure that your weight is actually moving in the direction you want it to. In one study that explored the effectiveness of weighing yourself daily on weight loss, it was shown that individuals who weighed themselves everyday consumed fewer calories and lost about 6.6% of their body weight, compared with those who didn’t weigh themselves daily that lost less than 1% of their body weight.
